What causes limp curls?

Limp curls aren't the end of the world, but you certainly deserve better! Why? Your curls are free spirits. They’re unpredictable and untameable – that’s what makes them so fun. But not all of us are graced with an abundance of luscious locks. If you have fine hair that can fall limp and lifeless, your delicate curls especially won’t like being weighed down. Love, you’ve gotta release the heavy stuff.

Every strand of hair on your head has its own oil-producing follicle that pumps out sebum to keep your scalp and hair healthy. When it comes to fine hair, the diameter of each strand is smaller than the average hair. Each hair strand takes up less space, meaning there’s room for more of them on your head. It’s not hard to do the maths: More hair strands = more oil glands = more oil on the scalp.

Your hair needs to produce these natural oils to keep the strands lubricated and to prevent dandruff and an itchy scalp. But if you let this oil build up too much, your roots will get greasy and your curls will be weighed down, leaving them limp.

What's the main cause of limp curls?

Don't worry - we're going to get to the bottom of this one. Here are the three main curlprits:

Overuse of products: From our experience, curly hair is happier when it’s not washed so much. We recommend limiting your wash day to once a week (shocking, we know!) to avoid the buildup of products and to keep a healthy balance of natural oils. Fine hair is easily weighed down, so the more you load it up with styling products the flatter it gets.

Using the wrong products: When choosing products for your curls, it’s time to get picky. There’s no point using a volume-boosting shampoo for your limp curls if they’re also dry and damaged. So stay away from products heavy on alcohol and drying agents. Find a nutrient-rich and moisture-locking conditioner to revive your curls from the inside out. They’ll be back to their rambunctious and rebellious selves in no time.

Excess oil: Having fine hair means there are more strands per square centimetre on your scalp than other hair types. And since each and every strand of hair has its own oil gland, the more strands you have, the more oil is produced by your scalp. The oil drags your hair down, leaving you with limp and often greasy hair.

How can you salvage limp curls?

Fear not, fine hair – our Curl Heroes are here to bring the bounce back into your curls.

01 Shampoo

For those who want clean curls without compromising on moisture, the 01 Shampoo is made with nutrient-rich baobab oil, scalp-soothing aloe vera and yucca plant extract, cupuaçu butter a.k.a one of nature’s most powerful moisturisers and some deep-conditioning coco love. Naturally cleansing to clear away any buildup and excess oil.

Keep things simple. Lather up and rinse out. Don’t skimp on the scalp massage and make sure you rinse out thoroughly.

04 Curl gel

A lightweight solution for hair that hangs heavy, the 04 Curl gel is gelled with natural gum and enriched with moisture-boosting baobab oil and conditioning coconut oil for perfectly defined curls without weighing them down. There’s also some soothing aloe vera leaf gel to promote shine and sweet orange essential oil for wash day bliss.

Use in the shower as part of your wash day routine. This means putting it on as soon as you’ve rinsed your conditioner off while your hair is still dripping wet. Do it in sections if your hair is super curly to make sure it’s covering all of your hair. If your hair needs extra moisture, follow up with your favourite oil. You can also apply a little to dry hair to instantly smooth frizz and fly-aways.

What are the best haircare ingredients to fix limp curls?

There are a number of hero ingredients that can rescue your curls from limpness. We've narrowed it down to three:

Aloe vera leaf gel

Cooling, soothing, healing, strengthening… Is there anything this plant can’t do? With fatty acids to reduce the inflammation caused by dandruff and deep-conditioning qualities, aloe vera is a dry scalp’s best friend.

Much gentler than your average hair product, it removes excess sebum and buildup from other products to cleanse the hair and scalp. Some say it even makes your hair grow faster – explained by the high count of vitamins A, C and E that contribute to cell renewal. Aloe there, dream hair.

Baobab oil

There’s a reason why this superhero ingredient features in all five of our products. Extracted from the seeds of the fruit that blooms on the majestic Madagascan baobab tree, this nutrient-rich oil has been used by women for centuries for its deep conditioning qualities.

Packed full of fatty acids and vital vitamins, including all three omegas, this wonder oil absorbs quickly into the hair to nourish, moisturise and soften your curls. They don’t call it the Tree of Life for nothing.

Cupuaçu butter

Moisture-rich and filled with fatty acids, butters are a curl’s best friend. But not all butters were created equal. Cupuaçu is an Amazonian superfruit, and the butter pressed from the seeds is one of nature’s most powerful moisturisers.

With healing hydrophilic (water-loving) properties that lock in moisture and a whole alphabet of vitamins and antioxidants to feed your hair with nature’s goodness, this butter will banish breakages. Plus, it creates a protective barrier against the sun’s harmful UV rays. Hello, summer and shine.
