6 ways to stay grounded in nature in the city

Feeling a little fried and frazzled? (And no, we’re not talking about your curls here). Babe, it’s time to get grounded.

We’re city girls at heart. We’ve got that urban buzz pulsing through our veins. But too much buzz can lead to burnout, and that ain’t so pretty. Sometimes we need a little help keeping our feet on the ground.

If you find yourself questioning things more than usual, feeling too spacey to focus or having a hard time functioning like a normal human being (we’ve all had those days, babe), chances are you could do with some grounding.

Here are five things you can try to get in touch with the grounding powers of nature when you live in the city. Try saying the affirmations out loud or in your mind for extra grounding.

1. Spend time outside every day

Getting your daily fix of fresh air can work wonders for your wellbeing. If you feel the urge to move your body, honour it! Take it outside for a spin around the park, a run along the river or wander around a new area of your city to see if you can find some green space.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you tune into your breath as you move to really bring yourself back into your body.

Affirmation: I allow my breath to anchor me to the present moment.

2. Try earthing

Earthing is a therapeutic technique that’s used to reduce pain, stress, depression and fatigue. It works by connecting yourself to the earth to realign your electrical energy, by placing your bare feet or hands onto the earth.

It’s also a simple way to feel grounded, since you’re literally ‘grounding’ yourself into the earth. There’s something so comforting about feeling soft grass, smooth sand or crumbly earth beneath your bare feet. Just make sure the area is clear of anything sharp or smelly before you take off your shoes.

Affirmation: I am grounded, I am centred, I am strong.

3. Get your blue mind on 

Another way to reconnect with nature is by getting in or near water. There’s a whole Blue Health movement exploring the link between water and our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. But you don’t need to live by the coast to feel the calming benefits of water.

Search out your nearest blue space – be that a river, lake, canal or trickling stream. Dip your toes in, listen to the ripples and watch how the light dances across the surface. Close your eyes, and let your mind wander to distant shores.

4. Meditate on your roots

Whilst you’re out on your daily walk, why not find a quiet spot beneath a tree to sit and just be? Five minutes is all you’ll need. As you sit quietly, tune into your breath and imagine roots growing out from you and into the earth. Send those roots all the way down into the centre of the Earth. Feel the support of the ground beneath you, holding you and keeping you steady and safe.

Affirmation: The earth supports me, I am safe.

5. Keep a bottle of essential oils on you 

Essential oils have amazing benefits for your emotional wellbeing. Just one whiff of calming clary sage or soothing sandalwood will make your shoulders instantly drop and relax. Smell around and get to know the oils you like best, and pop a small bottle in your bag for grounding on the go.

6. Bring the outdoors in

You don’t have to go outside to connect with nature. Let nature come to you! Fill your home with beautiful houseplants to uplift your spirit and boost your mood. Caring for your plants can also be super therapeutic, so go ahead and get green fingered.

You could even try growing your own plants or veggies – just pop them on a sunny window sill, top them up with water and plenty of love and they’ll be as happy as your curls in coconut oil.
