A guide to exfoliating your scalp (when you have curls!)

Your curls are precious. They deserve special care and attention, babe. One essential yet often overlooked aspect of maintaining healthy curls is scalp exfoliation. Curly hair can be prone to dryness and buildup due to the structure of the hair shaft, making it crucial to work scalp exfoliation into your hair routine.

Exfoliation helps to remove all the stuff that can accumulate over time, like dead skin cells, product buildup, and excess oils. By gently exfoliating, you're essentially clearing the path for your curls to thrive and blossom. Which is exactly what we want! Regularly exfoliating your scalp not only promotes a healthy environment for hair growth but also enhances curl definition, reduces product buildup, and prevents common scalp issues.

So, let's dive into the wide world of scalp exfoliation and why it's an absolute game-changer for maintaining those gorgeous curls of yours. Here's how to do it:

1. Use a silicone brush

Use a gentle scalp brush or a silicone exfoliating pad to scrub your scalp in circular motions. This method helps to dislodge debris and stimulate blood circulation, promoting hair growth. Be sure to use a light touch to avoid tangling or damaging your curls, babe!

2. Try a DIY, natural exfoliant on your scalp

For an easy, make-at-home exfoliant, mix two tablespoons of brown sugar with one tablespoon of coconut oil to create a natural scrub. Gently massage the mixture onto your scalp using circular motions. The brown sugar exfoliates while the coconut oil nourishes and moisturises your scalp, leaving your curls feeling fresh and rejuvenated.

3. Follow up with a curl-loving, deep conditioning treatment

Following scalp exfoliation, indulge in a deep conditioning treatment to restore moisture and nourish your hair, babe! Choose a curl mask (like the 05 Curl Mask) that’s rich in plenty of natural oils. Apply it generously from the mid-length section of your hair, all the way through to the beautiful ends.

So, babe, there you have it! Three easy ways to give a little extra love to your scalp. Just remember, the frequency of scalp exfoliation all depends on your hair type and individual needs. You could aim for once every two weeks to avoid overstimulating your pretty little scalp! It's important to adjust the frequency based on how your scalp and curls respond, babe. We're all learning here!

Also, during exfoliation, be sure to be mindful of your curls. We're hoping to strike a happy, healthy balance here. Over-exfoliating or using harsh products can do more harm than good, and we don't want that, babe! Use gentle massaging techniques to avoid tangling or causing damage to your hair, like focusing on the roots rather than pulling the exfoliator through the length of your curls. x
